Women's Tennis Sweeps WNE, Moves on to CCC Semifinals

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team swept Western New England University Wednesday afternoon 5-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals.

The Hawks entered the postseason matchup ranked third in the CCC standings, while the Bears (4-7, 3-5 CCC) were the lower seed at six.

The Hawks built their lead in the doubles matches with a three-game sweep. Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Morgan Schrader and Christina D'Agostino 8-1. Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) and Heidi Martin's (Scituate, Mass.) teamwork aided them in their 8-2 win over Petra Martinelli and Maylene LaPress. Ali Stankiewicz  (Brunswick, Maine) and Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) took down Kim Phu and Rachel Bauer by a score of 8-2.

Only needing two wins in the singles matchups to receive the team win, Hughes and Riley got the job done for the Hawks. Hughes swept LaPress 6-0, 6-0 and Riley downed Jessica Cote 6-2, 6-2.

With five straight wins, the games that were still in progress came to a stop. In three of those four games, the Hawks had won the first set. Stankiewicz took the first set against D'Agostino 6-0 and was tied 2-2 in the second set. Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) had won the opening set and was up 4-2 against Bauer. Grinivac defeated Martinelli 6-0 and was winning 4-2 in the second set. Akerman had dropped the first set to Schrader 3-6 but took the first game of the second set.

The Hawks (11-3, 6-2 CCC) will head up to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday in a non-conference regular season match against Clark University. Their next postseason match will be on the road against two-seed Endicott College in the CCC Semifinals next Tuesday, October 17.
