Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Gordon College 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field.
The Hawks entered the matchup hoping to snap a five-game losing streak. They were 4-10 overall and 2-7 in CCC play. The Gordon College Fighting Scots were 3-12 overall and 1-8 in conference games. The Hawks were ranked fifth in the CCC standings and Gordon was ranked seventh.
Prior to the game, the four seniors were recognized for their contribution and dedication to the RWU field hockey program. The seniors were accompanied by family and were applauded by those in the stands. The seniors were Mary-Kathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine),
Elizabeth Whitney (Norwalk, Conn.),
Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.), and
Jenna Clavette (Enfield, Conn.).
The Hawks opened the match with a goal in the 5
th minute by Whitney. The Hawks pushed the ball downfield, Whitney took a shot but was blocked. She shot again on her rebound and found the back of the net. This was her third goal of the season.
The Hawks grabbed their second goal of the day in the 25
th minute. Miccile took a shot off the corner by Slattery but it was blocked. Miccile picked up the rebound and put it past Gordon's goalie Julia Altman. The Hawks' lead extended to 2-0.
The Hawks' tight defense kept Gordon to six shots in the first half.
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) recorded four saves by halftime.
RWU added another goal on a penalty stroke by
Gabby Masciarelli (Lunenberg, Mass.) in the 5
th minute to push their lead to three goals to none. This was Masciarelli's third goal on the season.
Gordon answered with a goal of their own in the 10
th minute. Sabrina Jandreau scored her fifth goal of the season on an unassisted goal that slipped past Lunn.
The Fighting Scots put the ball in the back of the net a couple times but both goals did not count as they were taken from behind the arc.
With under a minute left, the Hawks strung together one last score. Clavette passed to
Lea Peterson, who poked a shot past Altman. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the home team.
The Hawks finished with 21 shots. Lunn grabbed seven saves in the win.
RWU moves to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in CCC matchups. The Hawks will take on Western New England University on Wednesday, October 25 in another CCC game.
