Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team picked up their 10
th win of the season in a complete sweep of Western New England University (4-6, 3-5 CCC) Tuesday afternoon.
In their final conference matchup and regular season match, the Hawks were looking to secure a spot near the top of the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings going into postseason play starting next week.
Prior to the match, four seniors were recognized for their dedication and contribution to the Women's Tennis program. These seniors were:
Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.),
Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.),
Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.), and
Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine).
The Hawks took all three doubles matchups. Hughes and Akerman teamed up to shut out Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) 8-0. Riley and
Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) defeated Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) by a score of 8-2. Stankiewicz and
Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) took down Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and Kim Phu (Wolfeboro, N.H.) 8-1.
In the singles matchup, the Hawks swept in three matches 6-0, 6-0. Hughes took down LaPress, Stankiewicz defeated D'Agostino, and Riley shut out Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.). Akerman won 6-3, 6-0 against Schrader. Bauer was the closest Golden Bear to squeeze out a win, but
Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) was able to take the win 7-6, 6-2. Grinavic closed out the regular season for the Hawks with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Martinelli.
The Hawks (10-3, 6-2 CCC) await their final seeding and opponent for the CCC Quarterfinal next Wednesday at home.
