Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The University of New England took the season series over the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team with a 5-0 victory over the Hawks Saturday afternoon.
The Nor'Easters struck first in the 10th minute. Hannah Buckley (Leominister, Mass.) picked up possession in front of the goal and fed a short pass to Reanna Boulay (Liberty, Maine). Boulay was able to turn and put a shot just inside the left corner to put the Nor'Easters up 1-0.
UNE added another goal in the 23rd minute, with Buckley this time being the recipient of the score. Vonde Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) tapped a pass to Buckley who was able to turn and fire into the left side of the goal for her seventh score of the year.
The Nor'Easters tacked on one last score in the first half five minutes later. Brooke Lemerise (Bartlett, N.H.) served up a corner to Marge Gardiner (East Northport, N.Y.) at the top of the arc. Gardiner stepped up and shot one through the Hawk defense and rolled it into the goal, giving the Nor'Easters a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Hawks struggled to get their offense going in the period.
Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y.) and
Drew Abbott (Uxbridge, Mass.) attempted the only shots for RWU in the half, with UNE's Liz Sargent (South Burlington, Vt.) easily turning both shots away.
UNE continued the scoring shortly into the second half with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. In the 38th minute, Saunders came down the field on a breakaway and found Olivia Madore for an open shot on goal. Saunders would follow with a goal of her own 70 seconds later, blasting a chest-high shot in the middle of the goal.
The Hawks were able to hold UNE off the board for the remainder of the game, but unfortunately the Hawks were shutout out offensively as well and held without a shot in the half.
Sargent needed only two saves for the shutout, while
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) made six saves for Roger Williams.
Roger Williams (4-7, 2-5 CCC) travels to Nichols College on Tuesday, while UNE (9-4, 6-1 CCC) hosts #11 Bowdoin College tomorrow afternoon.
