HENNIKER, N.H. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling Team headed north to the Granite State on Sat., Feb. 11, for a quad meet against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, American International College and host New England College.
Roger Williams (21-2) would defeat all three schools on the day by a combined score of 114-18, coming a day after losing the Pilgrim Cup championship against interstate rival Johnson & Wales University.
The Hawks would face off against New England College first, winning in a 45-0 shutout. This is New England College's first year for wrestling as a varsity sport, so their lack of experience showed in the pounding to the seventh-ranked Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Roger Williams would then defeat RPI by a score of 46-12, then AIC 23-6.
Leading the Hawks on the day with three wins each was the freshmen duo of
Brett Leonard (New Milford, Conn.) and
Christopher Francis (Bristol, R.I.). Leonard wrestled against NEC for two of his wins, coming in the 174 and 184 lbs. weight class, with his last win versus RPI in the 174 lbs. weight class. Francis would wrestle against all three schools on the day, earning victories all in the 197 lbs. weight class.
Four Hawks would also score at least two wins on the day. Freshmen
Chris Gural (Roselle Park, N.J.) and
Brayson Haas (Schnecksville, Pa.) earned two wins each, while juniors
Carter Merecki (Cambridge, N.Y.) and
Joseph Russo (Rocky Point, N.Y.) were the lone upperclassmen on the day to snag multiple victories.
