Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis notched an 8-1 victory over Simmons College Friday afternoon in the team's first match of the 2017-18 season.
Roger Williams rolled to three straight wins in doubles play.
Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and
Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) downed Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) and Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) with an 8-1 win at #1.
Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) and
Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) rolled to an 8-4 victory at #2 against Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam).
Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) and
Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) wrapped up the sweep with an 8-2 win at #3 over Paolo Rios (Miami, Fla.) and Gail Tynkov (Edison, N.J.).
At singles, Stankiewicz and
Taryn Roche each earned 6-1, 6-0 wins. Stankiewicz defeated Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) at #3 while Roche earned the win against Rios at #4. Akerman picked up the 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory against Johnson. Grinavic pulled off a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Tynkov at #5, while Riley beat Tynkov 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
Schroedl logged the lone win for the day for the Sharks at #1 singles, wining a 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 marathon match against Hughes.
Roger Williams (1-0) hosts Bentley on Tuesday, while Simmons (0-1) welcomes Gordon on Monday.
