Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team collected its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season with a 5-0 win over Nichols College Wednesday evening.
The Hawks put a couple of shots on goal in the first minutes of the first period.
Emma Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) and
Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) each logged attempts for RWU, but both shots would be kick-saved by Nichols' Brooke Misbach (Guilford, Conn.).
RWU would continue to be persistent on the offensive end, eventually coming away with the first goal of the game in the 17
th minute.
Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) had the ball near midfield on the far left side and sent a long pass through multiple defenders to a wide-open
Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.). McNeil took the pass and knocked in a shot in the right corner.
Carlee Tolley (Chatham, Mass.) nearly scored for the Bison in the 27
th minute. After a Hawk foul near the arc, the Bison got the ball inside to Tolley on the right. She tapped a shot that came close to scoring but just went wide right.
The Hawks would answer with a second goal in the 30
th minute. Stevens ended up with the ball after a penalty corner and gave a pass to McCarthy just in front of the goal. She was able to get the ball away from the Bison defense and slip in her first goal of the season to give RWU a 2-0 advantage.
The Bison had another chance to score five minutes into the second half. Macayla Belt (Rochester, N.Y.) had the ball on the left side and attempted a shot towards the left side of the goal. However, she sent it just a bit too far left as it glanced off the left post.
Roger Williams would go on an offensive tear in the 54
th minute, notching three goals in the span of two minutes.
Elizabeth Whitney (Norwalk, Conn.) scored twice for the Hawks, with
Taylor Powell (Windham, N.H.) assisting on both goals.
Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) would sandwich her tally between the two Whitney scores, lofting a shot into the left corner.
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) earned the shutout for RWU, making four saves in the game. Misbach had a busy night in goal for Nichols, saving 14 shots.
Both teams continue CCC play on Saturday with Roger Williams (3-1, 1-0 CCC) at the University of New England and Nichols (2-2, 0-1 CCC) home against Endicott.
