Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team lost to Nichols College Wednesday afternoon by a 6-3 score.
The Hawks entered their third Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup coming off a complete sweep of Suffolk University earlier in the week. However, the Hawks were unable to keep the Bison off the board Wednesday.
The afternoon started with Nichols College taking two out of the three doubles matches. Amarie Settiwongse (Bangkok, Thailand) and Juliana Herrera (Villavicencio, Columbia) defeated
Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and
Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) 8-3.
Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) and
Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) fell to Nichols's Danielle Mandel (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Lindsey Kaplan (Boca Raton, Fla.) 8 sets to 4. The Hawks picked up their first win when
Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) teamed up with
Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) to defeat Megan Nathanson (Scarborough, Maine) and Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) 8-4.
In singles play, Nichols College stayed locked in and took four of six points. Settiwongse set the pace against Hughes and won 6-1, 6-0. Isabelle Leonardi (North Hampton, N.H.) defeated Stankiewicz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Rachel McDonald (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) gained a point for her Bison team with a win over Grinavic 6-2, 6-1. Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) put up a fight against Herrera but it was not enough as Herrera won 7-6, 5-7, 10-8.
The Hawks picked up two wins in hard fought singles matches. Akerman was able to take down Nathanson 6-2, 0-6, 10-7. Riley grabbed her win 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 over Dallaire.
Wednesday's loss drops the Hawks to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Hawks travel to Milton, Mass. on Saturday to take on Curry College in a CCC matchup.
