Wrestling Begins 2018 With Two Wins

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team began 2018 with a pair of wins against Trinity College and Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at the Trinity College Quad Meet.
 
The Hawks opened up the day falling 15-19 to WPI before coming back with a 22-18 victory over Wesleyan and a 33-6 win over Trinity.
 
Against WPI, Roger Williams jumped out to a 15-0 lead before the Engineers won the final five matches, capping the victory at the heavyweight bout with Austin Shrewsbury defeating Adam Patsun (Somers, Conn.), 2-1.
 
Roger Williams bounced back though with another close match, this time finding themselves on the right side of a 22-18 victory over No. 20 Wesleyan. The Hawks took a commanding 19-3 lead after a pin at 165 by Tyler Gazaway (New Providence, N.J.) before Wesleyan won the final three-of-four bouts to make the final score closer.
 
The final match of the day saw Roger Williams jump out to another large lead against Trinity. Gazaway put the Hawks up by a 17-3 margin via technical fall over Jack Reilly while Nathaniel Lindsay followed with a 6-1 decision over Lukas Kaminski at 165. Mason Calise pinned Devon DeFillippi at 197 to push RWU over the 30-point mark en route to the win.
 
Gazaway, Nicholas Barbaria (Scarsdale, N.Y.), and Jason Jacobi (Effort, Pa.) each finished the day undefeated, going 3-0 at 165, 125, and 133, respectively.
 
The Hawks travel to Springfield on Wednesday to take on Western New England and Mount St. Vincent.
