WENHAM, Mass. - In their third consecutive game decided in extra time, the Fighting Scots gave up a sudden death heartbreaker tonight to the Hawks of Roger Williams in the 98th minute of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Soccer grudge match at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex. The loss marks the Scots' second straight, moving them to 7-6 overall (3-2 CCC).
RWU captain
David Majetich (Sr./Williamstown, Mass.) netted the winner for the Hawks to propel them to 13-2 overall and 3-2 in conference.
From the outset it was clear the going would not be easy for either side, as both teams traded possession, shots, and some physical play but no tallies to set the tone for what was shaping up to be fierce battle.
With the score still knotted at 0-0 coming out of the half, the Hawks wasted little time breaking their silence as
Garrett Bolton (Jr./Candia, N.H.) finished a
Connor Edwards (So./Deerfield, Mass.) corner just 38 seconds into the frame to take the one-goal lead. Then, almost exactly four minutes later, a takedown in the box of Gordon's Jarvin Ramirez by a RWU defender set up Tyler Modzeleski to bury the equalizing penalty kick for his seventh goal of the season.
The remainder of the period saw several opportunities but no goals and three more yellow cards to add to the two already booked in the first half, all of which served to raise the stakes for the winner-take-all overtime.
Unfortunately for the Scots, the Hawks' lone shot of the first OT period was a deadly one as Edwards served up another beauty of a corner which was flicked on by
Tyler Andrade (Fr./S. Glastonbury, Conn.) to Majetich, who swiftly tucked the ball past Gordon netminder Brody Veleber for the walk-off victory.
The Scots look to get back in the win column as they host Nichols College in another CCC tilt on Wednesday, October 17 at 7 p.m. The Hawks travel to Curry on the same day for a 4 p.m. start.
