BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball Team lost to UMass-Dartmouth in a tight game this Sunday, 72-68.
 
The Corsairs started the game with a three-pointer by Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) followed with a jumper form Ian Carmichael (Atkinson, N.H.) for the Hawks to put the score at 3-2. With a three-pointer from Ashworth, UMD gained a five-point lead until Bryan Donovan (Gainesville, Fla.) scored a three-pointer for RWU to put the score at 13-15.    
 
The teams went back and forth with the Hawks trailing behind the Corsairs. With about four minutes left, Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) cut their lead to one with the score at 27-28. Less than 30 seconds later, Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) scored a three-pointer to tie the game 30-30 with less than four minutes left in the first half.
 
With 35 seconds left, Patrick Gavin (Beverly, Mass.) for UMD had an and-one to bring their lead to 35-32. The Corsairs would eventually end the first half in the lead 39-32.
 
Atakan Atcam (Ankara, Turkey) started the second half with a layup for the Corsairs. Less than a minute later, Heaton scored a three-pointer for the Hawks to put the score at 35-41. Five minutes later, Ashworth extended UMD's lead 45-37 with a three-pointer taking an assist from Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass.)
 
UMD gained a lead of 10 points at 49-39 with about 12 minutes left in the game until Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) scored a three-pointer for the Hawks. UMD gained back their lead with an and-one from Gavin to put them up 54-44.
 
The teams went back and forth with the Orsairs keeping a lead of 10 points for the third time at 60-50. With less than six minutes left, Akcam scored a layup followed by a jumper from Ashworth to give UMD their biggest lead at 64-50.
 
With less than two minutes left, Coene grabbed a rebound and passed it to Heaton to score an and-one for the Hawks to bring the score to 60-66. Ben Stone (Hebron, Conn.) then took an assist from JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) to score a three-pointer and cut the Corsairs lead to three with just under two minutes left.
 
Ashworth scored a jumper for UMD to bring the score to 68-63 followed by two free throws from Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.). With 20 seconds left, Pugliese scored a three pointer for RWU to bring the score to 70-66. 
 
Pfohl then scored a layup for RWU with 4.9 seconds left to bring the score to 68-71. Obiora would clinch the win for UMD with a free throw to make it a four-point lead.
 
Coene led RWU had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Jeff Stockmal (Shelton, Conn.) contributed with 11 points and one rebound.
 
Leading UMD was Ashworth with 20 points. Obiora had a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Gavin also contributed with 14 points and four rebounds.
 
Roger Williams (2-4) will travel to Western New England University this Wednesday. UMass-Dartmouth (3-3) will host Southern Main University this Wednesday.
