NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team remained undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference play after defeating Salve Regina University 68-54 Tuesday evening.
The Hawks were led by the 28 points and 10 rebounds by senior guard
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.).
JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) added 11 points and six assists, with
Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) and
Drew Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) contributing seven points each.
The Hawks came out with a 9-2 run to begin the game in their favor. RWU's defense was on point early on, holding the Seahawks to only four points over the first seven minutes of play. A three-point play by Pfohl at the 11:54 mark gave RWU a 20-8 lead, their largest of the half. RWU would eventually go into halftime with a 34-23 lead.
In the second half, Roger Williams maintained its edge over Salve Regina the rest of the half. The Seahawk made short run close to the end of the period, turning a 39-50 deficit into a 46-53 game with just over seven minutes to play. However a 13-3 run put RWU up by 17 with under three minutes to play as RWU held on for the win.
Roger Williams (5-4, 3-0 CCC) will host Connecticut College Saturday next.
