WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team claimed two wins at the WPI Super Quad Saturday afternoon, defeating NYU 31-15 and #22 Coast Guard 26-16.
In the opener against NYU, the Hawks trailed early, dropping four of the first five bouts. However Roger Williams would come back and claim the final six matches to come away with the win. Taylor Shay (New Fairfield, Conn.) made it 9-15 with a 6-2 decision over James Murdoch at 165, while Brett Leonard pinned Maykel Dolorith at 174 to tie the match at 15.
A forfeit win for
Connor Humphries (East Longmeadow, Mass.) 184 put the Hawks up 21-15. Mike Fernandes (Voorhees, N.J.) earned a 14-3 major decision over Jack La Corte at 197, followed by a forfeit win for
Adam Patsun (Somers, Conn.) at 285 to clinch the win.
Nicholas Barbaria (Scarsdale, N.Y.) helped give RWU a quick 6-0 lead against Coast Guard with his second forfeit win of the day at 125. Nick Wagner (Wall, N.J.) downed Steven Pangelinan 16-1 at 141 while
Justin Cochran (Paramus, N.J.) pinned Patrick Moynihan at 149 to put the Hawks up 17-4.
Shay and Tyler Gazaway (New Providence, N.J.) each picked up victories for the Hawks at 165 and 157, respectively, to extend the RWU lead to 23-4. NYU would claim wins at 174, 184, and 197, but it would not be enough as Patsun wrapped up the win with a 3-2 triumph over Cory Tomasetti.
