BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 9-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks took #2 and #3 doubles by identical 9-0 scores.
Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and
Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) paired up at #2 to defeating Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and Beverly LaChapelle (Caracas, Venezuela) while
Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) and
Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) downed CiCi Deakin (Standish, Maine) and Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.) at #3. At #1
Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and
Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) collected an 8-1 win over Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.).
At singles, Roche earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Butts at #2, while Spillane defeated DeLuca 6-3, 6-2 at #3. Magliato won her #4 match 6-0, 6-1 over LaChapelle, while Gianitsos and Bennett won their matches 6-0, 6-0. Gianitsos earned her win over Deakin at #5 and Bennett got her victory at #6 against Erickson.
Martin and Sollecito were locked in a tight battle at #1. Martin fell behind after Sollecito took the first set 6-1. Martin came back with a 7-5 win in the second set, then wrapped up the sweep for RWU with her 10-3 win in the superset.
Roger Williams (3-1, 2-0 CCC) will head to Nichols on Tuesday, while Wentworth (0-4, 0-1 CCC) travels to Endicott on Sunday.
