BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team escaped with a 2-1 win over Rhode Island College in the second day of the Roger Williams University Opening Weekend Invitational.
The play was high-paced early on, with both teams pushing the ball up and down the field. Roger Williams kept the ball in their offensive half for a good portion of the period. However, it would be Rhode Island College that would strike first.
At the 24-minute mark, Dennis Vasquez slipped a pass in between two Hawk defenders to Brandon Ramos, who was making his way towards the top of the box. Ramos would chip a shot into the left corner to give the Anchormen a 1-0 lead.
In the 31
st minute, an ill-advised pass back to the goalie by Rhode Island College led to a free kick for the Hawks inside the penalty area.
Colby Decker (Colchester, Conn.) put up back-to-back shots, but both balls deflected off of Anchormen defenders, keeping RWU off of the board.
Three minutes into the second half, RWU just missed an opportunity to tie up the game.
Stathi Panagiotidis (Norwalk, Conn.) skipped a short pass to
Lucas Watt as he was towards the left side of the box. He appeared to have a chance at a clear shot on goal, but could not hold onto the pass as the first touch just got away from him, giving RIC keeper Charlie Tashijian a chance to claim the loose ball.
Panagiotidis later had another look at a shot around the 58
th minute. He was making a charge on the ball and was just about to put a foot on the ball. Yet RIC's James Petrella (Willington, Conn.) used his body to shield the ball and kept Panagiotidis from putting a shot up.
In the 69
th minute,
Jordan Lach (Norton, Mass.) kicked a long pass to a streaking
Steven Karp down the left side. Karp grabbed control of the ball and had a 1v1 with the keeper. He tried to put it in the right corner, but a diving stop by Tashjian denied RWU the tying score.
RWU's perseverance paid off in the 75
th minute, when
Ryan Miller (Hillsdale, N.J.) outran and maneuvered through the Anchorman defense, taking the ball down the left side and knocking a shot in to tie the game at one.
Garrett Bolton (Candia, N.H.) would then prevent the game from going into overtime with the game winner with less than two minutes left.
Connor Edwards (North Yarmouth, Maine) served up a corner kick to the back side of the goal. Bolton headed it towards the left corner, deflecting it off of a RIC defender trying to clear the ball.
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) had five saves for RWU in the win, while Tashjian stopped nine shots in the loss.
Roger Williams (2-0-0) will face Worcester State next Saturday.
