BRISTOL, R.I. –The Roger Williams Field Hockey team suffered a heart-breaking 2-3 loss against Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon in a shootout after double overtime. Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) and Maisey Kettlewood (Nottingham, N.H.) both scored in the shootout to win the game and to set the Hawks back with their first loss of the season.
In the fifth minute of the game, RWU's
Lea Peterson (Upton, Mass.) took a shot that was saved by Valiant goalkeeper Elana Nacinovich (Carmel, N.Y.). The ball then bounced to
Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.) who assisted
Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) on her first goal of the game.
Then in the 25
th minute, Manhattanville's Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va.) tied it up by finding the ball in front of the goalie after a long pass from Raquel Brown (Claymont, Del.) to Antinozzi.
In the second half, Hawks goalkeeper
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) had an incredible save from a penalty stroke by Brooke Hadgraft (Sandy Hook, Conn.). She made a one-handed save for RWU in the 39
th minute.
Late in the game, McCarthy scored her fourth goal of the season from a shot within the semi-circle. McCarthy put in her second goal of the day in the 63
rd minute as it appeared that it would be the game winner. However, Thomas scored her second goal of the day off of an assist by Arnise King (Wilmington, Del.) to tie it up again with three minutes left in the regulation. In the two overtime periods, both teams had plenty of opportunities to score in overtime but couldn't fulfill their potential including a shot by
Callie Chase in the final seconds of the second overtime period that went wide.
During the shootout, the Hawks were unsuccessful in the four attempts. Antinozzi and Kettlewood both scored for the Valiants to help Manhattanville get the win.
RWU freshman goalkeeper
Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.) had ten saves on the day while teammate
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) had four. Nacinovich (Carmel, N.Y.) finished with six saves for Manhattanville.
The Valiants are now 1-2 and the Hawks have a record of 2-1.
Next up, the Hawks will face Wesleyan University on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Middletown, Connecticut and then Thursday at 7 p.m. at Fitchburg State University.
