Coene Sets Points Record In Men’s Basketball Win Over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) broke the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball program record for career points in a 102-89 win over the University of New England Saturday afternoon.

Coene, who led RWU with 29 points and 16 rebounds on the day, surpassed the previous record of 1,928 set by Ed Randolph back in 1982. He now has 1,932 career points and will seek to become RWU's first 2,000 point scorer.

The game was tightly contested in the first half, with both teams combining for five ties and seven lead changes. UNE led by as many as eight in the period. The Nor'Easters held a 34-26 advantage with just over five minutes left in the first half before a Coene trey knotted the game at 42 with 1:42 left. The game would ultimately go into halftime tied at 45.

UNE gained the lead early on in the second half before Roger Williams took the lead on a Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) three to make it 53-51 with 16:56 left. RWU held off UNE until the Nor'Easters tied the game at 73 with 7:45 left.

From there, however, the Hawks turned the game around with a 19-7 run that gave RWU a 12-point lead with 2:45 left. The Nor'Easters were unable to significantly cut into the deficit as RWU held on for the win.

Pugliese added 21 points while Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) had 20 points and six rebounds. JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) finished with six points, six rebounds, and a career-high 12 assists.

Roger Williams (9-9, 6-3 CCC) hosts Salve Regina on Tuesday.
