BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team cruised to an 84-72 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) sank a layup for the first points of the game before Wentworth tied up the game on the following possession. RWU would come back with a jumper from Coene and a three by
Drew Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) for a five-point lead.
RWU held on to the lead for most of the half until a three-point by Gavin Keough put the Leopards up 22-21 with 7:25 left. Wentworth held RWU off for a minute before a pair of free throws by
Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) regained the advantage for the Hawks with a slim 25-24 lead.
With the score tied at 27 apiece, a jumper by Hart helped spark a 13-4 run to end the half, allowing RWU to take a 40-31 lead going into halftime.
The Hawks managed to hold off Wentworth for most of the second half. The Leopards crept back into the game halfway into the period. A three-point play by Matt Vartanian tied the game at 50 with 12:07 left.
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) put in a layup to give RWU a 52-51 lead. His basket began an 8-1 run to put RWU ahead by eight.
The Leopards managed to pull within four in the final three minutes of the game, but a 12-4 run by Roger Williams put the Hawks in the driver's seat en route to the win.
Coene led Roger Williams with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, while
JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) added 13 points and eight boards. Hart and Heaton finished with 14 points and 11 points, respectively.
Roger Williams (11-9, 8-3 CCC) will host Gordon College next Saturday at 3:00 pm.
