BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball Team took the victory against Western New England on Senior Day this Saturday, 88-73.
Seniors recognized before tonight's game were
Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.),
Ben Stone (Hebron, Conn.) and
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Conn.).
Heaton put the Hawks on the board first with a three-pointer taking an assist from Stone. Less than a minute later Mike McGuire (Garden City, N.Y.) for the Golden Bears, scored a layup to put the score at 2-3.
The Hawks kept a strong lead in the first 12 minutes with layups from
JJ Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) and
Bryan Donovan (Gainesville, Fla.) to bring their lead to 20-14. WNE cut RWU's lead to one with a layup from John Earle (Hadley, Mass.) and a three-pointer from Zachary Tavitian (Milford, Conn.), to put the score at 19-20.
With five minutes left in the first half, Heaton scored a three-pointer to bring RWU's lead up 31-22. Four minutes later,
Drew Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) made a layup to finalize the score going into the second half, 35-25.
Tim Reilly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) started off the second half with a layup for the Golden Bears. Seconds later, Coene followed up with a layup for the Hawks. The teams continued to go back and forth with a three-pointer from McGuire followed with a layup from Hart and the score at 39-31 with the Hawks in the lead.
With just over 18 minutes left Alex Sikorski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) cut RWU's deficit with a three-pointer at 41-36. A minute later,
Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) scored a three pointer for the Hawks followed with a layup from Coene.
RWU kept a strong lead throughout the second half as the teams went back and forth. With 11 minutes left, Coene scored an and-one to put the score at 60-48. Four minutes later, Coene scored two layups in a row to give the Hawks their biggest lead of the game so far at 76-56.
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) scored the last two points in the game for the Hawks with a layup to bring the final score to 88-73.
Roger Williams (14-11) will host the CCC Quarterfinal next week. Western New England will (11-14) will also head to the CCC Quarterfinals next week.
