Men’s Lacrosse Earns First Win Of 2019

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team claimed its first victory of the season, defeating the University of Massachusetts-Boston 16-4 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
 
Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) kicked off the scoring for Roger Williams, converting a pass from Drew Mullin (Ridgefield, Conn.) two minutes into the game. After six minutes of scoreless play, RWU would tally four more goals in a two-minute stretch from Grier, Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.), and Andrew Gaffney (Cherry Valley, Mass.). The Hawks would take their 4-0 advantage into the second period.
 
Ned Parker quickly put the Beacons on the board in the opening minute of the second, but Gabe Reale (Fairfield, Conn.) got the score right back for RWU a minute later. Darragh Fahey (Walpole, Mass.) touched the back of the net with ten minutes left in the half. However, that would be the Beacons last score for the rest of the period and most of the third. RWU would take a 7-2 lead into halftime after Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) scored two more goals for the Hawks.
 
Marzec and Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) both added two goals each in the third period to help extend RWU's lead to 11-2. Donny Bickford (Braintree, Mass.) ended the RWU run with a goal in the closing seconds of the quarter.
 
In the fourth, Roger Williams would outscore UMass-Boston 5-1, with tallies from Bova, Marzec, Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) and Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.). Jack O'Brien scored the final goal of the game for UMass-Boston with 13 seconds left as RWU picked up the win.
 
Marzec (4 G, 1 A) and Mulllane (2 G, 3 A) each finished with five points for RWU, while Grier scored three times. Phillips and Bova each finished with two goals and an assist. Harrison Levesque (Ridgefield, Conn.) won 13 of 18 faceoffs with a game-high 11 ground balls. Mullin added four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made seven saves in the win for RWU.
 
Parker, O'Brien, Bickford, and Fahey each scored for the Beacons. Robert Ranta (Newton, Mass.) notched four caused turnovers and three ground balls, with Jack Fournier (West Newbury, Mass.) adding three caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Cameron Dixson (Wayland, Mass.) had 20 saves in the loss.
 
Roger Williams (1-1) will travel to UMass-Boston on Wednesday, while UMass-Boston (0-1) goes to Curry College on Saturday, March 2.
