ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.—The Roger Williams Baseball team split in a double header against N.C. Wesleyan this afternoon 0-4 and 3-1.
Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Hawks allowing three hits, one run, four walks, while earning two strike outs.
Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and
Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.) came in for relief pitching one inning each.
In the season opener, Trey Croom (Wilmington, N.C.) homered to score the first run of the game and put N.C. Wesleyan on top 1-0.
Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) hit his second single of the game in the bottom of the fourth that advanced
Anthony Dominguez ( Chester, N.J.) after a walk. However, the Hawks couldn't execute at the plate to get the runners in which ultimately lead to the Bishops taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Alec Titmus (Tampa, Fla.) had a RBI single followed by an error that caused two more runs to be scored resulting in N.C. Weslyan finishing the game off at 4-0.
Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) and
Eli Camner ( Hamden, Conn.) also chipped in with one single each for the Hawks.
In game two,
Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) received the win allowing three hits, one earned run, four walks, and two strikeouts. Teammate
Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) got the save allowing only one hit and two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, Croom walked and advanced to second after a SAC by Bishop teammate Cedrick Kornegay (Faison, N.C.). Brandon Wheat (Lithia, Fla) singled, which advanced Croom to third but an error caused Croom to score and take the early lead 1-0.
Going into the top of the fourth, two Hawks were hit by Bishop pitcher, J.D. Makauskas (Jacksonville, Fla.). Next,
Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice scoring on an error. Cedeno then grounded out to third base but got the RBI as Roth scored. Lastly, Camner hits an RBI single plating Jenkins for the 3-1 lead.
Joey Gualino (Meriden, Conn.), Dominguez, Roth,
Noah Keefe (Cato, N.Y.), and
Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) recorded a single that assisted the Hawks to their first win of the season.
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday the 12
th against Case Western Reserve at 2p.m.
