BRISTOL, R.I. —The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse dropped a 9-12 decision to Nichols College Wednesday afternoon in both teams' Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season finale.
The win for Nichols snaps a 28-game losing streak to the Hawks, as Nichols came into the game 1-28 against RWU. This is the Bison's first victory over RWU since both team's first-ever matchup back in 1988.
Cian Keohane (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) put Nichols up 2-0 early on with a pair of goals in the first four minutes of play. Roger Williams responded with goals by
Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) and
Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) in the final two minutes of the first quarter to tie the game.
Scott Trudel (Manchester, Vt.) gave RWU the lead five minutes into the second with
Connor Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) putting the Hawks up two with his first goal of the season. Nichols would tie the game at four with back-to-back goals with under four in the half. However
Connor Hillemeir (Farmington, Conn.) scored the go-ahead goal to help put RWU up by one going into halftime.
After a
Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.), the Bison rolled off three straight goals to take a 7-6 advantage. Marzec tied the game with 3:42 left in the period while Grier put RWU ahead by one going into the fourth.
Brendan Coates (Grafton, Mass.) tied the game two minutes into the fourth before
Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) put RWU back on top. That would be the final Hawk tally of the day as Nichols scored four unanswered goals in the final 9:21 of play. Jack Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had the equalizer while Coates put in the eventual game winner.
Coates and Keohane both finished with three goals apiece, while Campanale and Connor Santoni (Hartwick, Mass.) both chipped in with a goal and two assists. Hugh O'Donnell (Charlestown, Mass.) had a game-high seven caused turnovers. Brian McKinley (Woburn, Mass.) earned the win, making 13 saves.
Marzec and Grier had two goals each. Hillemeir won 19 faceoffs to go along with 14 ground balls.
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made six saves in the loss.
On Saturday in the CCC Quarterfinals, Roger Williams (11-6, 5-3 CCC) will host Salve Regina while Nichols (10-6, 4-4 CCC) will travels to Curry.
