BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Softball Team defeated Nichols College this Sunday in a doubleheader on Senior Day winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 7-4.
The seniors recognized were
Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.),
Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.),
Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.),
Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) and
Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.).
The first game was off to a slow start despite three singles from the Bison in the top of the first inning.
Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.) was the first to get a hit for RWU with a single to the pitcher in a bunt, yet the scoreboard remained at 0-0.
Pretchel continued to strikeout the Bison and got on first base herself in the bottom of the fifth with a single up the middle. The Hawks still did not get a run going into the sixth.
RWU was the first and only team to get a run on the board in extra innings. With
Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) on placed on second in the eighth,
Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) hit a double to center field to take the walk off win for the Hawks 1-0.
In the second game, the Bison was first to reach home after a fielder's choice from Taylor Commesso (Hingham, Mass.) for Colleen Callahan (Billerica, Mass.) to score. Determined to increase their lead, Aiello scored after an RBI from Katrina Valeri (Middleton, Mass.) to bring the score to 2-0.
In the top of the third all three Nichols batters got out with
Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) on the mound.
The Bison increased their lead by two in the top of the fifth. Mayhew grounded out to the first baseman but scored teammate Samantha Kostek (Oxford, Conn.). Commesso then hit a sacrifice fly to bring Callahan home for a 4-0 lead.
RWU reached home for the first time when
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) reached first on an error by the center fielder and then advancing to second. While this was happening,
Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored making it a 4-1 ball game.
The Hawks were not done fighting as they tied the game at 4's in the bottom of the sixth. A. Lombardo started the streak by reaching first on an error by the shortstop to bring
Sydney Provencal home (Cumberland, R.I.).
Tara Chatowsky then reached on a fielder's choice for
Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) to score followed by Pohl reaching first on an error and advancing to second to bring A. Lombardo home.
With a tie game in the seventh inning and runners on second and third, Goria hit a three run homer over the left field fence to give the Hawks the lead for the first time at 7-4.
All three Bison struck out in the top of the seventh with Murray on the mound and RWU took the win with a final score of 7-4.
Goria led the Hawks with two runs and three RBIs. A. Lombardo contributed with seven putouts.
Roger Williams (19-20) will be heading in the CCC Tournament next week. Nichols College (16-15-1) will host New England College on Tuesday.
