BRISTOL, R.I. – The third-seeded Roger Williams University Softball team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament after suffering an 8-0 loss to #1 Endicott and a 12-6 loss to #7 Gordon.
In the opener against Endicott, the Hawks and Gulls spent the first two innings locked in a scoreless battle. In the bottom of the third, Jamie Hopgood hit a two-run homer to give Endicott the lead. The Gulls would add a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings on RBI doubles.
Holding a 5-0 lead going into the sixth, the Gulls tacked on another score on an RBI infield single by Carly Marchitto. After another RBI double for Endicott, Marchitto scored the game-winning run on a single by Olivia Odermatt.
RWU's best chance to score in the game came in the fifth inning, when
Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) and
Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) were on second and third with two outs, looking to cut the three-run deficit. Unfortunately for the Hawks, a fly out to center ended the rally.
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) was 2-or-3 at the plate for RWU. Pohl, Goria, and
Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) all went 1-for-2. Hailey Pretchel (Glenmont, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up three runs in 3.0 innings.
The second game saw Gordon jump out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Rose Shannon and Gabby Hunt. The Scots would add two more runs in the top of the third on RBIs from Lily Rivera and Caitlin Catalanotto. An RBI single and a sac fly in the top of the third put Gordon on top 6-0.
After a scoreless fourth, the Hawks mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth.
Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) gave RWU its first run of the ay with an RBI single to bring home
Bay Naples (Livingston, N.J.).
Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) then came through with a two-RBI single, scoring Lombardo and
Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.). Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) stepped up next and brought in Fleming and
Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) with a two-RBI double.
The one-run deficit would not last long for RWU as the Scots put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth, two of which on bases-loaded walks. Then in the top of the seventh, Gordon's Kaelie Mercado used a two-out single to make it a 12-5 game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fleming led off the inning with a single to left. With runners at first and third, Pohl scored Fleming with an RBI groundout to make it 12-6. Unfortunately for the Hawks, a foul-out to first ended the game in Gordon's favor.
Fleming ended the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while
Elizabeth Lombardo was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Alex Lombardo went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings.
