Hawk Talk Episode 18: Matt Emmert (Swimming and Diving)

Matt Emmert, the head coach of both the Roger Williams University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams as well as the new Diversity and Inclusion Designee for Hawks Athletics joined host Bryce Johnson on Hawk Talk this week. On this week's episode, they discussed Emmert's new role, his coaching philosophy on the pool deck and his ironic fear of open water.

Emmert has been at the helm of the Roger Williams Swimming and Diving program since 2012 and he has enjoyed a very successful run in blue so far. Since his arrival, Emmert and his staff have coached 170 NEISDA champions, 58 ECAC qualifiers, and two NCAA Championship provisional qualifiers. He is widely known as one of New England's top coaches when it comes to individual stroke refinement and efficiency.

Now in his ninth year in Bristol, Emmert holds a combined career record of 84-51 in duals competition. He has been named the New England Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Association Coach of the Year four times total, three times on the men's side and once with the women including collecting the honors with both squads in 2020. From 2014-17, he guided the Hawks to four-consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships on both the men's and women's sides. Additionally, he has added seven regional championships including sweeping the championships with both the men's and women's teams in 2017 and 2020. In total, he has coached the Hawks to four consecutive regional titles with the men from 2017-20 and three with the women in 2016, 2017 and 2020.
 
Prior to his time with the Hawks, Emmert held stints as an Assistant Coach at the University of Maryland and Texas Christian University. He is a 2004 graduate from the University of Rhode Island, where he set the school record in the 200 Yard Freestyle.
