Well Balanced Performance Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – Three different players found the back of the net as the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team grabbed their third consecutive win over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe, Nichols College, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field. Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) scored his third goal over the past two games while Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.) and CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) also got in on the fun to back a strong effort in net by John Padavano (Flemington, N.J.) in the win.

With the victory, the Hawks grab their fifth win in their last six tries and improve to 7-5-2 on the season and 4-1-0 in CCC play. The Bison on the other hand, fall to 4-6-0 on the season and remain winless in five tries against in-conference opponents.

Padavano made his seventh start in net for the Hawks this season and put together one of his strongest performances to date by allowing just a single goal while making four saves and in the process, he improved to 4-3-0 in goal. RWU has also come out on the winning end in four of his last five starts.

Nichols split time in net with Franco Berreto-Santana (Leominster, Mass.) receiving the start. He was under constant pressure and as a result, he allowed three goals despite making eight saves across the first 75:10. He took the loss to fall to 2-6-0 on the season. Luke Speers (Collegeville, Pa.) relieved him and made a pair of saves over the final 14:50.

Hawk Highlights
Jack Wetzel: 1 goal (GW), 1 shot, 1 shot on goal
CJ Sousa: 1 goal, 3 shots, 1 shot on goal
Justin Horvath: 1 goal, 4 shots, 4 shots on goal

John Padavano: 4 saves, 1 goal allowed, 90:00 minutes in goal

Axel Areiza-Bentancur: 1 assist
Jon Christy: 3 shots, 2 shots on goal

Franco Berreto-Santana: 8 saves, 3 goals allowed, 75:10 minutes in goal
Luke Speers: 2 saves, 0 goals allowed, 14:50 minutes in goal

Hawk Highlights
Roger Williams wasted little time jumping in front in this one thanks to Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.). He forced a turnover along the right boundary within the Bison defensive zone. He quickly brought it up the side and then took a shot from about ten yards away on the right line of the 18-yard box. His shot was a missile that zipped past Nichols' goalie Franco Berreto-Santana (Leominster, Mass.) and into the top left corner of the net, opening the scoring in the seventh minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for Wetzel.

Neither side was able to get on the board for the remainder of the first half despite a number of chances. RWU outshot Nichols 11-5 in the half including taking more shots on goal, 6-1, and they also received more corner kicks, 3-2.

The beginning of the second half looked like a completely different ballgame as each team managed to score within the first minute.

The Hawks began the crazy sequence when Javi Beltran took a corner kick from the left corner and sent a low line drive that found the head of Tyler Andrade (South Glastonbury, Conn.). The ricochet went to the top line of the six-yard box beyond the left post where Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) was waiting. He then contorted his body to swing his right leg through the bounding ball, half-bicycle kick style, and into the back of the net for the score extending the RWU lead to two.

It took the Bison just 14 seconds to get the goal right back, however. They managed to work the ball into the Hawks zone on the right side where it was handled by Nicholas McGrath (Northborough, Mass.). He sent a feed into the box to Axel Areiza-Betancur (Medellin, Colombia) who tapped it back to Nathan Salamon (West Springfield, Mass.) who blasted a shot into the left post, but it caught enough of the frame to deflect into the net for the score. The goal was the third of the season for Salamon and cut the deficit to one.

Things settled down from there and Roger Williams got an insurance tally in the 69th minute. RWU received a free kick from a good spot from about 35 yards out and straight away. Beltran took the kick that was subsequently headed by Jack Wildermann (Madison, Conn.) and travelled loosely in front of the goal within the six-yard box. Berreto-Santana tried to come out and make a play on it, but CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) got there first and got a piece of the ball to get it into the net for the score. It was the first career collegiate goal for Sousa.

All in all, Roger Williams effectively controlled the ball in the contest and that resulted in the Hawks having twice as many shots, 27-13, shots on goal, 13-5, and corner kicks, 6-3, then the Bison in the win.
