Softball Splits in Season Opener

NEW LONDON, CONN. – The Roger Williams University Softball team split their doubleheader against Mitchell College in their season opener on Saturday. RWU lost 4-5 in extra innings in game one and was victorious 2-1 in game two.

How It Happened
Mitchell was up 3-0 in the top of the fourth when the Hawks started making a comeback. Goria singled through the left side to plate teammate Provencal. Beaulieu hit an RBI triple to right center field to tack on another run for the Hawks in the top of the fifth. Later that inning, Mitchell's Amaker answered with an RBI triple of her own to make the game 4-2. The Hawks were not done yet though, in the top of the seventh with two outs, Beaulieu and Provencal hit back-to-back singles that put RWU in a good position for Lombardo. Lombardo reached on an error to score one, and Goria hit another single RBI up the middle to tie the game. No runs were added until the bottom of the eighth when Mitchell hit two singles, and RWU walked Lipsky to win the game.

How It Happened
Mitchell scored first in the bottom of the fourth when Hill singled to right field, bringing home teammate Madison. In the top of the seventh, Burdick and Ruzzano hit a pair of singles to left field. Ruo came up and crushed a double to center field, tying the game. Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, NY.) was next in the order and reached first on an error by Mitchell's shortstop to secure the 2-1 win.
 
What's Next
Roger Williams (1-1) faces Anna Maria College at home on March 17th at 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
Mitchell (1-1) travels to Johnson & Whales University on March 17th for a 4 pm and 6 pm doubleheader.
