How It Happened
In the opener, a home run by Kyle Bouchard in the bottom of the first put the Bison on top 1-0. Nichols would then break the game open in the bottom of the third, putting up seven runs in the inning including a two-run homer by Brennan Hyde.
Tyler Cedeno scored
Tommy Hobin in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but that would be the Hawks' lone run of the game as the Bison tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth. The Hawk offense was held in check in the game, as RWU managed only three hits and two walks in the contest.
That would not be the case in the second game, as the Hawks exploded for 19 runs in the second game, the team's most since April 10, 2011 when the Hawks scored 20 runs, also against Nichols.
Jack Morin and
Danny Roth each launched two-run homers in the second and third innings before the Bison plated four in the third to tie that game at four. Runs would be plentiful for both teams, with Roger Williams scoring three times in both of the fourth and fifth innings, but Nichols hung in with two runs in the fourth and a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth to go up 10-11.
In the seventh, Morin and
Joey Gulino scored for the Hawks to regain the lead for RWU, but again Nichols came back to score three in the bottom of the inning to take a 14-12 lead.
In the top of the ninth, RWU took advantage of misplay at third to pull within one. Then
Kyle Davenport knocked a two-RBI single to put RWU up 15-14.
Ben Bonavita would cap off the rally with a grand slam to give RWU a 19-14 lead. Nichols would score one in the bottom of the ninth but RWU held on for the win.
