How It Happened
Roger Williams got on the board early and often in the first half beginning with
John Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.) in the third minute.
Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.) got the ball and got deep against the Clark defense on the right side of the six-yard box drawing out the goalkeeper. He then managed to force a crossing pass through where Fogarty was waiting right in front of the net, and he redirected it into the goal for his first career score.
The Hawks kept the pressure on and in the 14
th minute that paid off.
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) controlled the ball and forced his way through a pair of Clark defenders before dumping a pass back to
Jack Wildermann (Madison, Conn.). He fired a shot from the top of the six-yard box that was blocked but the rebound rolled all the way across to the opposite side of the box where
Matt Bagley (Trumbull, Conn.) was wide open. He took a shot from the top-left intersection of the six-yard box and went to the top right corner of the net for his third tally of the season.
RWU tacked on one more before the half in the 39
th minute.
Zajdele Dulcine (Warwick, R.I.) sent a long through pass down the middle of the field that was corralled by
Geno Kennedy (Duxbury, Mass.) with a breakaway opportunity. He collected it near the top of the 18-yard box before dribbling across the box to about 12-yards away on the left side. He then took a left-footed shot back across the box and into the lower left corner of the goal for his first score of the year.
Clark managed more shots in the half as they took 13 against ten for the Hawks and had more shots on goal with nine against five for RWU. However, it was Roger Williams who took advantage of their opportunities.
The two teams battled to a scoreless second half. The Cougars got their top scoring chance in the 89
th minute when William Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got a shot from the left side of the six-yard box that was saved. The rebound then found its way to Connor Fitzgerald (Topsfield, Mass.) who took a shot, but
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) managed to recover and make that stop as well.
The Cougars outshot the Hawks in the second half 9-4, and overall, 22-14 including 14-7 in shots on frame. However, Roger Williams made 14 saves against just four for Clark in the win.
Coach's Corner
This game was a great showing of character from our team. We got steamrolled the day before against Wheaton and it was great to see our team respond the way that they did in the first half by putting three goals on the scoreboard. It was an overall great team win with a lot of new players getting on the stat sheet with a first career goal for
John Fogarty and assists for
Jack Wildermann and
Zajdele Dulcine. Also, another shutout for
Jack Avellar and our entire back line was much needed.
We are looking forward to another tough challenge with MIT on Wednesday and our first conference game against Wentworth on Saturday.
