HARTFORD, Conn. – Travis Arata (Riverdale, N.J.),
Kyle Kaiser (Paramus, N.J.), and
Cole Shaughnessy (Fairfield, Conn.) each recorded two wins by pin while the team finished with nine as the Roger Williams University Wrestling team went 2-0 at the Trinity Quad Duals at the Trinity Field House on Saturday afternoon. RWU started the day with a win over the hosts, Trinity College, 35-24 before defeating Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 39-11. In a mutual agreement, Roger Williams did not compete against the fourth team in attendance, Johnson & Wales University.
With the wins, RWU improves to 11-3 in duals competition on the season heading into the New England Duals next Sunday hosted by Johnson & Wales.
The Hawks matched up against the Bantams of Trinity in their first matchup of the day with the dual opening action at the 149-pound weight class. There,
Ben Bariso (Butler, N.J.) got Roger Williams off to a strong start against Trinity's Chris Perry (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), dominating the first period and staking himself to a 16-3 advantage before quickly finishing the win by tech fall in the second.
Michael Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) followed that up with a pin of Nicholas Crotty (Framingham, Mass.) late in the second period.
The Bantams bounced back with pins at 165 and 174 as Kevin Lyskawa (Londonderry, N.H.) and Adam Frost (Bennington, VT.) defeated
Jacob Cardozo (Southington, Conn.) and
Jayden Curley (Mansfield, Mass.) respectively and in the process claimed the advantage, 12-11.
RWU would respond by burying the Bantams by sweeping the upper weight classes all by way of pin. At 184, Shaughnessy continued his impressive start to his collegiate career, collecting his seventh win by fall of the season and pinning Anders Klass (Braintree, Mass.) in the first period. Arata and
Addison Boisvert (Scarborough, Maine) followed that up with pins late in the second frame over Timothy Glynn (West Windsor, N.J.) and John O'Brien (Reading, Mass.), staking the Hawks to a 28-12 advantage they would not relinquish.
Trinity did take two of the final three matches of the dual as Jacob Marselli (Tolland, Conn.) pinned
Ari Dinerman (Ashland, Mass.) and Aiden Herbert (Bethany, Conn.) beat
Tommy Gallagher (Foxboro, Mass.) by fall. However, sandwiched in between was Kaiser who made quick work of Mohammadali Zaidi (Hopkinton, Mass.), needing just 19 seconds to finish the win by fall and make the final score, 35-24.
After a break, Roger Williams faced off against WPI as the match opened with the 141-pound weight class. The Engineers grabbed the early lead as Chris Cook (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) beat Gallagher by tech fall, 16-0. The Hawks responded with Bariso getting his second win of the day, this time by pin fall over Isaac Krieger (Newton, Mass.) at 3:44. Forte got a win by forfeit at 157 before Cardozo earned a split on the day, beating Ryan Powers (Lebanon, Conn.) by decision, 6-2 and in the process extending the RWU lead to 15-5.
WPI took the bout at 174 as Ethan Edmondson (Milford, Conn.) snuck past Curley in OT, 6-4 but the Hawks bounced back right away. Shaughnessy pinned Lucas Wilson-Wuestefeld (Barrington, R.I.) in the first period followed by Arata pinning Alexi Echevarria (Beverly, Mass.) in the second and Boisvert earning a forfeit.
With the match in hand, the dual flipped to the bottom, and the teams split the final two bouts of the day. At 125, Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, N.J.) beat
Connor Keegan (East Sandwich, Mass.), 8-3 before Kaiser, for the second time on the afternoon, made quick work of his opponent needing just 39 seconds to put Tom Gradwell (Manchester, Penn.) on his back and make the final score 39-11.
