How It Happened
A layup by
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) on RWU's first possession put the Hawks on the board early on. After Thomas Hacker (Averill Park, N.Y.) answered with a three for Wentworth,
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) dropped in a floater to help spark a 10-2 run for Roger Williams that forced a Leopard timeout.
After the break, Wentworth began to make their way back in the game, with seven unanswered points capped off by a Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) to pull within two (12-14). However, Roger Williams would not allow Wentworth to come all the way back, keeping the lead within one possession. Leading 18-16 with 9:26 left in the half, the Hawks utilized a 12-2 run to make it a 12-point game with under five minutes left in the first half. RWU managed to keep their double-digit lead over the rest of the period, going into halftime up 37-24.
The second half saw the Hawks rolling early on. Annus used a four-point with 9:55 left to play to put Roger Williams up 58-37, the team's largest of the game up to that point. Roger Williams appeared to be cruising to the win, but from that point the tide began to turn in favor of the Leopards. Wentworth fired off 12 straight points over the span of two minutes to cut the deficit to nine. Then later, Goy hit one of two free throws to make it a four-point game (57-61) with 5:10 left.
Roger Williams would dig deep and clamp down on Wentworth, holding the Leopards to only two points over the next four minutes while
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) scored four of the Hawks' ten points over that stretch. That run would help the Hawks take a 71-59 lead with 1:29 left in the game and use that momentum towards the win.
