BRISTOL, R.I. – The No. 2 seeded Roger Williams University men's soccer team was able to use a survive and advance mindset on Saturday defeating No. 7 Gordon, 3-2, on Bayside Field in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinal.
Roger Williams was outshot 14-12, with the Fighting Scots putting two more shots on net.
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) made seven saves in the match, and the Hawks had one extra corner kick opportunity.
The Hawks got onto the scoreboard early in the contest, when
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) found
Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) open, for the opening goal in the ninth minute.
The Hawks and Fighting Scots were then scoreless until the final 10 minutes of the match, when Beltran scored his first goal of the game after
Matt Bagley (Trumbull, Conn.), found Beltran for the goal.
Just a few seconds later, Gordon took the ball off the kickoff, when Benny Simpson fired a deep pass to Cole Levis, cutting the lead to one. Casey Torres then found the back of the net with 91 seconds remaining, leveling the match at 2-2.
With the time quickly expiring, Beltran struck again in the final minute of play, as the Hawks held on for a 3-2 win.
