How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Coast Guard struck in the top of the second. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Lillia Farlow (Carrollton, Texas) knocked one-out single to score Mariah Dewey (Campbell, Calif.). The following inning, Dewey launched a double to right center to score Isabelle Shroyer and make it a 2-0 Coast Guard lead.
The Bears were not done, adding two more in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Selena Serna (San Diego, Calif.). They would tack one two more runs in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch and another single by Farlow.
Roger Williams' offense stalled in the game, scattering four hits in the contest. RWU's best scoring chances came in the first two innings.
Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) was stranded at second in the first inning after a one-out double. In the second,
Nicole Corey (Dighton, Mass.) pinch ran for
Bay Naples (Livingston, N.J.) after her leadoff single but was thrown out at the plate from third on a fielder's choice.
In the second game, Coast Guard plated two runs in the top of the first. Yet Roger Williams came right back with a six-spot in the bottom of the inning, with the first seven batters all reaching base while sending 11 to the plate in the frame.
Coast Guard slowly climbed back in to the game with runs in the second and fourth innings to pull within two. After a
Maddie Predaris (Rye, N.H.) sac fly in the bottom of the fourth to put RWU back up by three, Natalie Beck (Billings, Mont.) hit a two-RBI double in the fifth and later scored to tie the game up at seven.
The Bears' lead would not last long, as an RBI groundout by
Francesca Cioffi (Brewster, N.Y.) put RWU back up 8-7 in the bottom of the fifth. One inning later, the Hawks added to the lead on an RBI double by
Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.) and an RBI single by Naples.
Despite RWU's three-run lead, Coast Guard charged back in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single quickly brought the Bears back within one. A base hit up the middle tied the game at ten, while a squeeze bunt by Hope Drake Duval and a sac fly by Christine Carey gave the Bears a 12-10 lead. RWU managed a one-out single in the bottom of the frame but a strikeout and foul out behind the plate secured the win for Coast Guard.
