How It Happened
UMass-Boston came out of the gates strong, getting an early shot on net that was saved by
Duncan Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) who proceeded to turn it over on a full field heave intended for
Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.). This led to a Beacon goal by Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.), but the lead didn't last for long. Two Roger Williams goals in a mere seven seconds briefly turned the tide in favor of the Hawks. Mullane flipped in the first goal off a beautiful fake-shot-turned-pass from
Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.), and
Ryan Lawrence (Fairfield, Conn.) took the following faceoff all the way to the net for the second. UMB wasn't giving in as Trevor Koppy (Attleboro, Mass.) had a trio of saves keeping the Hawks out of the net before the Beacons tied the game with a Greg Wolff (Kingston, Mass.) goal. Once again, the Hawks responded off a laser from
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.). The back-and-forth opening quarter continued as UMB had a two-goal swing with the first coming from Gavin Admirand (Marshfield, Mass.)., and the second goal coming from Prozinski with a man-up advantage. Mullane blew two more goals past Koppy in just 32 seconds, once again giving RWU a 5-4 lead before Michael Claflin (Newton, Mass.) scored his first of the contest to tie the game at five heading into the second quarter.
RWU had their defensive abilities tested in the second quarter as a string of penalties continuously put them at a disadvantage. A late carryover body checking penalty that lasted the first 57 seconds of the frame saw the home squad lock down on defense, allowing only one shot that was saved by Gillis. Less than one minute later, The Hawks once again went a man down after a double penalty left RWU a player down for 1:30, and once again, the Hawks defense put the clamps on the Beacons offensive attack as they only mustered two shots that both sailed wide of the net. After a third Hawk was sent to the box, nd the Hawks defense finally gave in as Wolff snuck his second goal of the game. Roger Williams finally went on a man advantage of their own due to a Beacon too-many-men call that sent Darragh Fahey (Walpole, Mass.) to the box, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize. A smooth Gillis save following an RWU turnover deep in their defensive zone kept the home squad at a one goal deficit before Chad Kidd (Natick, Mass.) blew one by to give the Beacons the two-goal lead. RWU tried to turn things on offensively following a timeout, but none of their shot attempts were successful. An offsides call against UMB gave the RWU another man advantage, but the Hawks were once again unsuccessful, going 0-4 in the first half on extra-man opportunities. The period also marked the second time this season that the Hawks were been shut out for in a quarter.
An unassisted goal by Prozinski that snuck between Gillis and the post opened up the second-half scoring, but another strong offensive possession for Mullane gave the Hawks their first goal in over 22 minutes. After Grier pitched in an assist on Mullane's goal, he threw in one of his own to get RWU back within one. Fahey scored another UMB goal while playing a man up following a Phillips unnecessary roughness call, but Phillips made up for the foul scoring two goals of his own to tie up the game. Grier added another goal to his season total after leaping over a UMB defender to give Roger Williams the lead at 10-9 for the first time in almost 30 minutes of play. The back and forth continued as Claflin scored the Beacons' 10
th goal before Mullane lit the back of the net three more times over the last two and a half minutes of play, setting the new career single game high. His offensive effort gave Roger Williams a three-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
Two RWU penalties to open up the fourth frame gave the Beacons a two-man advantage for Charlie Chapman (Sandwich, Mass.) to score his first goal of the game, getting the visitors back within two. Another RWU penalty once again gave UMB the man-up advantage which they capitalized on thanks to another Prozinski goal. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the final session of play, the Beacons tied it up off the stick of Admirand. The Beacons onslaught on the offensive end continued as Wolff added to his total before Luke Murphy (Watertown, Mass.) added his first goal of the game to put the Beacons back up two. The Hawks weren't going to go away quietly, as
Noah Ravas (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) shoveled one in as the shot clock expired to keep RWU within one with 6:12 left. Another goal from Claflin once again pushed the Beacons back to a two-goal lead with 3:20 remaining in the contest. Fahey iced the game for the Beacons with his second goal of the game, extending the lead back up to 3. Claflin rolled in a dribbler between Gillis's legs with 51 seconds remaining to give the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons an 18-14 lead.
