Women’s Tennis Secures Shutout Win Over Salve Regina

BRISTOL, R.I. — On a sunny and spectacular afternoon in Bristol, the Roger Williams Women's Tennis team claimed an out of season win over Salve Reginal University, 9-0, on Wednesday at the RWU Tennis Courts. In their first action since their Spring Break Trip in Florida, the Hawks rolled to their fifth consecutive win over the Seahawks, all of them in shutout fashion.

With the win, RWU improves to 15-4 overall and 2-2 this spring. Salve, meanwhile, falls to 0-11.

Hawk Highlights
Salve Regina would prove difficult, but Roger Williams nonetheless swept the doubles matches in this one. Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) and Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) slipped past Sailor Nordstrom (New Bedford, Mass.) and Casey Farrell (Cumberland, R.I.) in the topflight, 8-5 while Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and Alexa DiCesare (Norwood, Mass.) outlasted Ellysa Tancrede (Chepachet, R.I.) and Graysen Scherer (Mystic, Conn.) by the same score. At the second flight, meanwhile, Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) rolled past Natalie Barros (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Elena Murdock (Westerly, R.I.), 8-2.

In singles play it was much of the same. Ferraro took care of Murdock, 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles. In the third flight, DiCesare beat Annemarie Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.), 6-1, 6-3. The Hawks dominated in the fourth and fifth flights where McCarthy beat Tancrede, 6-1, 6-0 and Santoro handled Scherer, 6-0, 6-1. In #5 singles, Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) handled Barros, 6-2, 6-1 but the best singles match of the day came in the topflight. There, Cahoon and Nordstrom battled to tiebreakers in the first match as Cahoon outlasted her foe, 7-3 to win 7-6 before shutting out Nordstrom, 6-0 to claim the win.
