Veterans Lead Charge, Men’s Lacrosse Slips Past Wentworth On Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. – The seniors were celebrated but the graduate students stole the show as Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) and Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) fueled the Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team to an 11-7 Senior Day victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field. Grier netted three goals to go with three assists while Mullane added a pair of goals and three helpers of his own in the win.

The victory brought RWU to 6-9 on the season and vaulted them ahead of the Leopards in the Commonwealth Coast Conference standings by way of tiebreakers as they stand at 3-2 in CCC play this season. WIT on the other hand, drops to 7-5 overall while also standing at 3-2 in conference play.

The Hawks posted 11 goals in the contest, the most in their last three games, all in support of Max Kimmel's (Milford, Conn.) terrific showing in net. He made 16 stops, the second-most in a game this season, while allowing seven goals to improve to 4-5 on the year. Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made ten stops against 11 goals allowed for Wentworth to fall to 7-5.

How It Happened
Wentworth jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter as Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) required just 60 seconds to find the back of the net for an unassisted tally. Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) added a second score for the Leopards but then the Roger Williams offense found its' footing. The Hawks proceeded to net four unanswered goals, bookended by the grad student connection of Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) and Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) as they each were on the receiving end of a feed from the other for their first goals of the contest. In between, Brian Gazard (Ashland, Mass.) scored the equalizer and Pehrson Szuluk (Avon, Conn.) got a transition tally for his first of the year, giving Roger Williams a lead in the process. When it was all said and done, the hosts had a 4-2 edge after one.

WIT once again got a quick strike from Madden on a man-up goal just 31 seconds into the second stanza. Moments later, Noah Ravas (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) netted his 21st of the campaign as the team drew an unnecessary roughness penalty allowing the special teams unit to go to work and they took advantage with Grier finding the back of the net with the man advantage. Jack Kester (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with the team's third tally in the span of under 90 seconds and RWU seemed like they were running away with this one though the tide rapidly turned. The hosts had a pair of penalties called on them in rapid succession giving the Leopards a two-man advantage and they executed. Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) found Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) for a shot and a goal twice within 45 seconds with both on man-up chances getting the visitors within two before Madden added his third of the contest to whittle the deficit to one and the squads went into the break with Hawks clinging to a 7-6 lead.

Out of the half, the defenses buckled down as neither side could find the back of the net in the third but Madden's fourth goal of the game on the power play less than two and a half minutes into the fourth evened things at seven all. After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless lacrosse by RWU, they finally got one on the board courtesy of Mullane off a dish from who else than Grier with 5:34 remaining and it opened the floodgates. Grier got one of his own about 40 seconds later before Kevin Murphy (Ramsey, N.J.) tacked on another less than a minute after that. AJ DaRin (Manlius, N.Y.) slipped one last tally in with 1:20 remaining and Roger Williams claimed the win, 11-7.
