Softball Earns Split With Gordon To Set Up Must-Sweep Sunday

WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Softball team split with the Gordon College Fighting Scotts on Saturday. The Hawks claimed game one by way of a 6-5 victory as Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tossed her 22nd complete game. Game two was a different story, as the Hawks bats went cold, and only mustered one hit over the five innings before the 9-0 run-rule loss. The split with Gordon sets up the Hawks to need a sweep over Suffolk on their Senior Day matchup on Sunday

How It Happened
A leadoff single up the middle by Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) would set the tone for the first tilt of the afternoon as the Hawks jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the first two innings. Following Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.) reaching on a fielder's choice during which Provencal was ruled out at second, Taylor Howell (Sandwich Mass.) would send a two-run shot over the fence for her second longball of the season to get RWU on the board. After two outs over the first three batters in the second inning, Provencal reached after getting plunked, sparking more offense. Rosado would once again make contact, driving in Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.), and Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.). Howell followed by knocking a single, driving in Provencal and Rosado, and getting RWU to the six-run mark.

Gordon would get themselves on the board in the bottom of the second. After following the Hawks lead of two outs over the first three batters, a single to center field, and a single through the left side, drove in one. The Hawks would be held scoreless the rest of the way, while the Fighting Scotts would begin to apply some pressure on Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) in the sixth. Four runs would be scored after Nocella handed out two free bases to the first two batters. Back-to-back singles would result in two runs before a sacrifice fly to left field and another to first base would also add two runs, cutting the Hawks five-run advantage to the final score of 6-5.

The second game would see the Hawks fall to a very different fate, as it would be Gordon jumping out to the quick lead. Nocella was once again deployed for the start, but she was the one giving up the two early runs. Following a second inning of three of the four Fighting Scotts grounding out, the hosts notched three straight innings of two or more runs while grounding the Hawks by only allowing one hit. The Fighting Scotts would split the two-game set with the 9-0 win.
