Garcia’s Season-Long Outing For Baseball Nullified By Walk-Off Defeat in CCC Tournament

BEVERLY, Mass. – Coming off a three-run victory on day one of the CCC Tournament, the third-seeded Roger Williams University Baseball team made the trip up to Beverly, Mass on Thursday, but would fall victim to the second-seeded Endicott College Gulls in walk off fashion, 4-3 at North Field. Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) continued his demonstration of power, launching his sixth homer in the month of May but it was ultimately nullified when Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) dumped a two-out single to left center to lift the hosts to the win.

The Hawks received a strong outing from Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.), who would toss a season-high eight innings, but did not factor into the decision as he exited the contest with the score knotted at three runs apiece.

How It Happened
Following an uneventful first inning that saw the CCC rivals only muster one combined hit, the second inning would see Roger Williams threaten to score first. Following a ground out, Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) knocked a single through the right side. Two batters later, Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) got a single of his own giving the visitors two base runners, but it was all for not, as a flyout would shut down the scoring opportunity. Endicott would get a leadoff single of their own in the bottom of the second, but three Hawks would get involved on a double play before a fly out would close out the inning.

A leadoff walk by Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) followed by a sac-bunt from Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) would get RWU another runner in scoring position with only one out in the third. A groundout would continue to advance Falvey, but the third ground ball of the inning would continue to hold the Hawks scoreless. In the bottom of the third, Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) fanned the first batter before a deep flyout to Falvey in right field would notch the second out of the frame. A rocky stretch ensued, as a hit batter would reach third off a single. The bases would then be loaded off a walk before the second hit batter of the inning would bring home the first, giving the hosts the 1-0 lead. A looking K by the seventh batter of the inning would see Endicott strand three baserunners.

Following a one-two-three fourth inning, Endicott would score their second run of the game. A leadoff double would see the baserunner advance to third on a sac-bunt. A ground out to Massaro at third would see the runner score before the inning would close on a swinging strikeout.

The Hawks would make their offensive mark on the game in the sixth inning, taking a one-run advantage. A leadoff strikeout would bring Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) up to the plate, and he would cash in with a double down the leftfield line. Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) eyed down a walk before Flynn launched his ninth home run of the season, thrusting RWU in front, while simultaneously ending the day for the Gulls starter, Nicholas Cannata (Marlborough, Conn.). The inning would come to a close off a groundout, and a swinging K.

It would not take long for the hosts to knot the score up, as another hit batsman would make the trip around the diamond off a ground-rule double and a groundout. Garcia would once again lock down the inning, picking up his seventh strikeout of the contest. The eighth inning would come and go as the Hawks would notch three more groundouts before Endicott would strand two.

The Hawks would suffer their fifth one-two-three inning of the game, and third in a row, as all three of their batters would strike out swinging in the top of the ninth. Then inthe bottom of the inning, the Hawks would follow a similar strategy as the day before, heading to the bullpen for the final frame, this time turning to Nick Harper (Westwood, N.J.). After hitting the leadoff man on the first pitch of the inning, a sac-bunt would advance the runner to second. Harper would fan the third batter of the inning before an intentional walk of Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) would bring up Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.). Notarangelo would tally the final hit of the game, as his RBI-single would give Endicott the 4-3 walk-off victory.
