How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning that saw both squads strand two runners each on the basepaths, it would the Rams getting on the board first. In the bottom of the second, back-to-back singles through the left side would open the frame then a throwing error by the second baseman load the bases before a grounder would be returned to
Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) in the circle. A run would be scored on the play, but it would go down as the only blemish on the day for the graduate student pitcher. The Hawks defense would do their part, turning a double play before catching the remaining base runner trying to take home to collect all three outs.
Following the one-run inning for Suffolk, the Hawks would rebound, scoring three runs over the next two innings to snag a two-run lead. In the top of the third,
Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.),
Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.), and
Taylor Howell (Sandwich Mass.) all knocked singles that reached the outfield, loading the bases for
Francesca Cioffi (Brewster, N.Y.). The senior catcher would rip a single of her own, and advance to second on a throwing error. The single would allow Uryga and Provencal cross home before two strikeouts would end the frame.
In the fourth, the Hawks stole a run from the Rams as
Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) would eye down a walk, and steal second. A sacrifice bunt by
Madison Tobin (Pittsfield, Mass.) would advance Wells, and mark the only time the Hawks offense would put a ball in play in the frame. Wells would complete her journey around the diamond by taking home on a wild pitch to give RWU an insurance run.
The Hawks offense went on to log only two more baserunners over the rest of the contest, but the two-run cushion they provided Fleming would be enough, as she would log a complete game for the third time this season, and second in the last five days with both coming against Suffolk.
