Record Day for the Offense Leads Baseball to Split with Gordon

WENHAN, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team split the final two games of the regular season with the Gordon College Fighting Scotts at J. Tec White Field by way of a 7-3 victory before a 15-13 loss on Saturday. With their 26-9-2 record, the Hawks are now positioned in the third seed in the CCC tournament, with a home contest scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th.

After tallying his first home run in over a month this past week, Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) added on in a big way in both games, sending a two-run shot over the rightfield fence in the ninth. Flynn would find a way to one-up himself in the second contest, setting the new program record for homers in a single game at three. Additionally, he joined teammate Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) as the only Hawks with multiple games of two or more homeruns in their career in a Hawks uniform. Flynn also tied the program record for runs scored in a game at 5. Closing off the record day for the Hawks offense would be Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.), as he would knock three doubles on the day to pass the previous mark of 16.

How It Happened
The Hawks offense appeared primed to jump out to an early lead in the first inning, but nothing would come of the early baserunners. Three shots to the outfield would result in only Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) reaching safely. The catcher Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) would eye down a walk, while Cedeno would advance to third off a throwing error. Another walk for Nick Zobian (Califon, N.J.) would load the bases, but a fly out to centerfield would strand the Hawks on the bags. Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) would trot out to the mound, and make quick work of the Gordon offense, striking out the first three Fighting Scotts to enter the batter's box.

The Hawks would light up the scoreboard in the second, as Ben Bonavita (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) would knock a leadoff single before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. The leadoff man, Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) would drop a single into right-centerfield to drive in Bonavita before getting into scoring position by stealing second, but it was all for not, as a swinging K would bring the top of the second to a close with a 1-0 lead.

Garcia would complete his CCC tournament prep in the bottom of the second, as he would grab his fourth strikeout of the day. Rookie pitcher, Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.) would enter the game in the third, and allow the first Gordon run of the game, although it would be unearned following a throwing error on the play. A Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) to Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) double play, would end the frame with the two CCC foes tied at one.

The fourth inning would come and go with each team sending four men up for plate appearances, while stranding one runner a piece. The fifth inning on the other hand, would see the Hawks snag another two runs, as Cedeno sent a double to left center before being advanced to third on a double to right from Jenkins. Both veterans would be driven in by a Morin single to left before three straight flyouts to the centerfielder would close the top of the fifth.

A similar fate would play out in the sixth. A pair of singles by the first two batters would put them on the corners before Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) stole second. A squeeze bunt by Massaro would drive in Mike Masino (Bayville, N.J.). Cedeno would then knock a groundball to third where a fielder's choice would catch Flynn trying to score. A groundout would close the frame with the Hawks up three, 4-1.

On the bump for RWU, Hynes would close out his final inning of work in the sixth, with his second straight one-two-three inning. After not seeing action in over a month, he would finish his second win with no earned runs on the scorecard..

Gordon would hold the Hawks scoreless over the next two frames, while in the bottom of the eighth and Chris Crawford (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) as the new reliever for the Hawks, Gordon would score their first runs since the third inning. A double, hit batter, and a single would load the bases before a Massaro fielder's choice to home would keep a run off the board. A walk would bring home the previously hit batsman before Brett Lauterbach (Fairfield, Conn.) would be deployed from the bullpen. After walking in another run, a strikeout and flyout would close the frame with Gordon closing in on the Hawks at 4-3.

The final frame of the first contest would be where RWU would notch their highest scoring inning of the game. Hobin would get halfway around the diamond following a single to right and a wild pitch. A pair of looking K's would set the stage for Flynn to tally his fifth homer of the season while driving in the Hobin. Massaro would then send a single to the right side before Cedeno launched a double to center to bring him home. A groundout would close out the three-run inning with the visitors on top by the final 7-3 margin.

How It Happened
Unlike the first contest the Hawks offense came through in the first inning. A leadoff walk by Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) would see him then steal second. He would reach third on the second of two ground outs. London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.), getting the start at catcher in game two, would draw a walk of his own. Massaro and Camelo would then advance off a wild pitch with the former tallying the first run. The third Hawk to draw a walk would precede a lineout to first to end the inning.

Gordon would quickly jump ahead in the bottom of the first. Three of the first four Fighting Scotts to arrive for their at-bats would launch doubles to each of the three outfield positions while the one remaining Scott would single to shallow center. The Hawks starter Ben Bonavita (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) would record his first strikeout before a bunt single would drive in a run. On the play, a throwing error by Bonavita would allow one more baserunner to reach home, giving Gordon the 4-1 lead.

In the top of the second, RWU would eye down another leadoff walk, with Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) following in the footsteps of Massaro in the first by stealing second before reaching third on a groundout. Flynn would be driven home by Massaro as a throwing error would make the run unearned. Both teams would be held scoreless until the top of the fourth inning.

The last Hawk to cross home, would also be the next as Flynn would send a solo shot over the right field fence. Mike Masino (Bayville, N.J.) would then send a shot of his own down the right field line that would earn him two bases before being advanced to third on a Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Massaro would once again reach first, this time with a single to right, while bringing Masino home in the process. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) would close out the scoring in the frame for RWU with an RBI double to center field, giving the Hawks the 5-4 advantage.

Roger Williams would continue adding on in the fifth as Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.), and Flynn would send singles to opposite sides of the outfield. With Hobin reaching third on the Flynn single, the latter managed to continue robbing bases with his second steal of the game. Masino sent a single up the middle to drive home the two in scoring position, and would advance to second on the throw home. Falvey got in on the action, driving the eighth Hawk home with a double to right. Two Hawks would be left stranded following a Gordon pitching change, but the visitors lead grew two more runs.

Gordon would have a response for RWU as they would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth before Kyle Schaefer (Madison, Conn.) was sent into action from the bullpen. Before the change, two walks and a single loaded the bases, with a wild pitch allowing a base runner to complete his trip around the diamond. A single to left would drive in two more, ending the day for Bonavita. Roger Williams would suffer a three men up, three men down inning before Schaefer would return to the mound, striking out three straight after an opening single.

The top of the seventh is where the Hawks would strike again. A throwing error would allow the leadoff Matt Kroll (Tewksbury, N.J.) a place on first. The Hawks would then deploy a pinch runner in Justin Piskorski (Berlin, Conn.), but it would not be needed as Flynn sent his second homer of the game over the right centerfield wall. Falvey followed a ground out to third with a single up the middle, and Massaro followed suit knocking a single of his own. Both men would advance a bag off a wild pitch, setting up a Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) single to bring both men home, giving RWU a 12-7 lead.

Gordon kept applying the pressure, as Nick Harper (Westwood, N.J.) would take the mound to start the inning. A single and wild pitch would see the leadoff man reach second before a flyout and strike out. A pair of walks would load the bases, but Gordons offense was unable to muster any runs with a groundout to Jenkins at first base.

In the top of the eighth, Alex Gulino (Ashburn, Va.) was deployed as a pinch hitter for the pinch running Piskorski, but flew out to the right fielder. This brought Flynn out from the on-deck circle, and for the third time in the second game, he sent a shot over the right field wall, getting the Hawks to their final mark of 13 runs.

A rocky bottom of the eighth would see Gordon gain their first lead since the middle of the fourth inning. With Adam Harz (Manchester, Conn.) tossing, the Hawks surrendered eight total runs off only two hits.  The frame would also feature four walks, and a trio of errors by the left side of the Hawks infield. Midway through the frame, Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) made his second appearance on the day for the Hawks, and picked up the three outs to end the inning, but the once six run lead had now transformed into a two run deficit.

Following a leadoff walk, a double play to second, and ground out to short would end the Hawks chances of sweeping the weekend set, as Gordon would come away with the 15-13 victory.
