WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team outlasted the Fighting Scots of Gordon Saturday afternoon, 78-75, to remain undefeated in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
The Hawks knocked down 16 three-pointers in the contest to the Fighting Scots nine in the contest, while also earning 14 attempts at the free throw line to the five attempts awarded to Gordon. The Hawks and Scots both had 13 points coming off the bench, while Roger Williams scored seven more points on second chance opportunities.
Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) tallied 16 points, going 6-9 from the field, including four triples. Sughrue also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and had a pair of stelas and a block on the defensive end.
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) and
Will MacDonald (York, Maine) both had 15 points while Macdonald pulled down five rebounds. Annus had a pair of steals to pair with two assists.
Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) also added double-digit scoring in the contest with four rebounds.
Max Manjos (Monroe, Conn.) kicked off scoring for the Hawks after knocking down a three, just under two minutes into the contest, before the Fighting Scots leveled the score with Michael Makiej scoring a layup and then finishing the three-point play at the free throw line.
The Hawks led 13-7 before Makiej finished a layup and Zach Quanico did the same on the fast break a few minutes later to cut the Roger Williams lead to two. Gordon took the lead after a three-pointer by Justin Yu with 1:38 remaining in the first half, but Sughrue knocked down a three of his own to regain a one-point advantage.
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) knocked down a pair of free throws, before Sughrue then finished a layup with 37 seconds remaining. The Hawks led 33-30 heading into the half after Tyler Long scored with seven seconds remaining for the Fighting Scots.
In the second half the Roger Williams and Gordon traded the lead back and forth 12 times, while the game was tied twice. With 2:24 remaining in the second half, Yu hit a three pointer to take a 75-73 lead for the Fighting Scots, but Lopes down the floor and knocked down a three-point jumper of his own 20 seconds later to give Roger Williams a one-point advantage. Lopes then scored on a layup on the Hawks next possession to ice the game.
Roger Williams (9-4, 6-0 CCC) will host Western New England Tuesday, Jan. 10 in a CCC battle for the top spot in the conference. The Hawks will then be on the road at Endicott on Saturday, Jan. 14 in a road CCC contest to wrap up the week.
