Men's Soccer: Roger Williams Punches Ticket to Second Straight CCC Title Game

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University men's soccer team won, 3-2, against Curry in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semi-final matchup, punching the Hawks second straight trip to the CCC Championship Game in the process.

Roger Williams took 19 shots over the course of the game, with eight being on goal. Curry was held to six shots, four of which were on goal. Neither team had an advantage in corner kicks, as both teams attempted four.

The Hawks got off to quick 2-0 lead in the first half. In the third minute of the game, Noah Massotti (Douglas, Mass.) crossed the ball into the box towards a crowd of players. Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass) connected with the ball, sending it to the back off the net on a header. The second goal for the Hawks came just minutes later. In the ninth minute, CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) received a throw in from the left sideline which he passed into the box. The pass was delivered perfectly to John Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.), who used his own head to direct the ball past the goalie and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Curry wasted no time and answered with a goal of their own in the 11th minute. Quick passes allowed the Colonels to advance the ball towards the Hawk's goal. From the left side of the 18-yard box, Richard Savage found Adam Pforr open. From just outside the box Pforr delivered a strike towards the bottom right corner, cutting the deficit to one.

Roger Williams was able to add another goal before halftime, increasing their lead back to two. In the 31st minute, the Hawk's earned a penalty kick from a foul by the Curry goalkeeper. Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) took the penalty shot, sending it past the goalie to make the score 3-1.

By the end of the first half, Roger Williams held on to a two-goal lead. The Hawks had outshot the Colonels 8-1 in the first half. Curry's only shot was on goal, while half of the Hawk's shots were on target. Roger Williams also held an advantage in corner kicks, with three opportunities from the corner compared to Curry's one. The one saves that was recorded in the first half by either team was by Curry's goalie, Brendan Cunningham.

Coming out of halftime, Curry once again cut the deficit to one. Conor McCann of the Colonels delivered a ball past a group of Roger Williams defenders to Lucas Drons. With great footwork, Drons was able to control the ball inside the box and deliver a shot into the goal to make the score 3-2.

The game remained 3-2 for the rest of the game. Curry had one more chance to tie the game in the final seconds on a corner. The ball was sent into the box, where Richard Savage was able to take a shot on goal. However, Hawk's goalie Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) made a diving save, knocking the ball out of bounds and keeping the clean sheet as the clock to hit zero.

Roger Williams (8-4-8, 4-1-3 CCC) will travel to No. 1 Western New England on Saturday for the CCC Championship Match at a time to be determined. The winner of the match will receive the CCC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
