BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team fell to Clark on Sunday afternoon, 90-86, in non-conference action, in their first contest following Thanksgiving.
Clark shot 51.6 percent from the floor, shooting 37.9 from beyond the arc, while Roger Williams shot 58.3 percent from the floor, knocking down 44.0 of their shots from three-point range. The two teams swapped possession of the lead six times in the contest, with the score being tied four times. Clark led 18-5 in second chance points, with 20 points coming off turnovers. The Hawks bench led 16-12, with the Hawks also scoring eight points off fast break opportunities.
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) led 27 points, going 10-of-15 from the field.
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) also added 20 points, with
Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.),
Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.), and
Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) each scoring in double figures. Sughrue dished out six assists, with Miller pulling down a team-high six rebounds.
In the opening three minutes of play, the Hawks trailed 13-4, but a three pointer by Ah Kao, sparked a 16-2 run, taking an 18-15 lead, 6:24 into the contest. Roger Williams expanded their lead to eight after Higgins knocked down a three. The Hawks led until the 1:39 mark in the first half, when Isaiah Taylor finished on a layup attempt to take a 44-43 lead, closing out the half.
Roger Williams levelled the score 1:57 into the second half, with the Hawks then taking a lead, after Ah Kao converted one of his two attempts at the line. Roger Williams expanded their lead to as many as 11 in the second half, but Clark whittled the lead down, taking a one-point lead with 8:32 remaining.
Clark then took a seven-point lead, with 6:06 left in the contest, but Roger Williams came back to take the lead off a layup by Annus, with 4:02 remaining. With 1:21 remaining the two teams were knotted up 86-86, but Bruce Saintilus converted both free throw attempts at the line, with 50 seconds remaining, and the Cougars held off the Hawks for the win.
Roger Williams (0-5, 0-0 CCC) will return to play on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 pm against Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent, Western New England. The Hawks will then play two CCC contests on the road at Suffolk and Curry to start December.
