BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team fell in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title game to Endicott, 2-1, on Bayside Field Saturday.
Endicott out shot the Hawks 18-10 in the match, with the Gulls putting eight shots on target to the Hawks two. The Hawks held the edge in penalty corners, 10-7.
Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) played the entire game in net for Roger Williams making six saves in the match.
The Gulls scored both of their goals in the opening frame. Just over four minutes into the match, Tori Swanson fired a shot that was blocked by a stick of a Roger Williams defender. Swanson then picked up the blocked shot and was able to put a second attempt into the back of the cage, giving Endicott a 1-0 lead.
Around three minutes later, Kathleen Reissfelder put a crossing pass over to Maddy Dengler, who scored a second goal for Endicott to take control early. The Hawks then took a pair of shots, one of which reached the Gulls Alexis DeMattia, that Endicott kept out of the net.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Hawks came out of halftime ready to score.
Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) put a shot into the back of the cage off of a pass by
Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.), for King's program record 22
nd goal of the season. Roger Williams had a pair of scoring opportunities off of penalty corners, but were unable to convert, going into the final frame, trailing by one.
Endicott came out with shots being fired with nine shots in the fourth quarter, controlling play in the frame to keep the Hawks offense at bay. The Gulls would hold on as the match closed with both teams being held scoreless.
Roger Williams (12-6, 4-1 CCC) currently ranked No. 4 in the region, will await the results of the NCAA Division III Selection Show on Sunday, awaiting the fate of their season. This was the first ever CCC Title Game appearance for the Hawks.
