Men’s Basketball: Hawks Fall to In-State Rival Salve Regina, Round out Play in 2023

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team fell to Salve Regina 92-81 on Saturday, in non-conference action in the Rodgers Recreation Center on the Campus of the Seahawks.
 
With the victory the Seahawks move to 6-5 on the season, while Roger Williams drops to 4-6. The Hawks were led offensively by Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) who tallied a career-high 26 points, coming off the bench, going 7-11 from the floor, including six shots from three-point range. First year, Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) was second on the team with 17 points, while also leading with 10 rebounds, recording his second career double-double, and his second in three contests. Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) and Sean Gogolin (Winchester, Mass.) each added double figure scoring with 11 points each.
 
On the defensive end, Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) had three steals to go with a team-high five assists in the matchup, while Devin Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a pair of steals and two assists, with eight points.
 
Salve Regina saw Miles Fiore score 24 points, with 10-13 shooting from the floor, with 12 rebounds.  The Seahawks outrebounded Roger Williams 48-27 on the glass grabbing 16 rebounds on the offensive end to the Hawks' 9. Clay Brochu had 18 points, with Declan Walmsley scoring 16 points with eight assists and seven rebounds.
 
Salve Regina scored on their opening possession, before jumping out to a 11-0 lead, holding the Hawks scoreless over the opening 4:38. The Seahawks led by as many as 16 points with 13:00 minutes remaining in the opening half, 19-3, before Roger Williams began to cut into the deficit.
 
Coming off the bench Higgins, drilled a three pointer, but Salve Regina answered with a three by Walmsley. The ensuing possession, Roger Williams scored again with Miller knocking down on a jumper inside the paint.
 
Trailing 24-8 with 10:53 remaining in the opening half, Higgins again connected on a three, that Roger Williams followed with a layup by Harrison Latimer (Topsfield, Mass.).  The Hawks cut the deficit down to eight after another three pointer by Higgins with 9:25 left in the half. After a pair of free throws by Noah Earl extended Salve's lead back out to 10, the Hawks hit a string of shots, cutting the lead down to three with 6:58 remaining.
 
With Salve holding a six-point lead with 1:45 in the frame, the Seahawks went on a 8-2 run to end the half, holding a 46-34 lead at the break.
 
In the second half the two teams played even throughout the second half, with Roger Williams outscoring Salve Regina, 47-46, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit as the Hawks fell.
 
Salve Regina (6-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) will continue New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at MIT in a 7 pm tilt in Rockwell Cage, before hosting Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 6 in the Rodgers Recreation Center.
 
Roger Williams (4-6, 3-0 CCC) will host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Nichols on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 pm in the RWU Campus Recreation Center, before traveling for a Thursday, Jan. 4 tilt at Wentworth.  The Hawks will then host three straight contests, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 3:00 pm against Gordon.
