BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger William's men's baseball team took on Western New England on Paolino Field Sunday afternoon. The Hawks downed the Golden Bears in the first game of the double-header, 7-4. In game two, Roger Williams won, 4-2.
On the mound in game one,
Dan Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) went 7.1 innings, striking out six batters.
Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) added 1.2 innings, with seven batters faced and one batter struck out. In game two,
JT Gunzy (Danbury, Conn.) pitched 5 innings and had four batters struck out.
Matt Hynes (Farmingdale, N.Y.),
Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.),
Kevin Blum (New City, N.Y.), and
Brett Lauterbach (Fairfield, Conn.) each added one inning with Mosca and Lauterbach striking out one batter apiece.
At the plate in game one,
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) recorded three RBIs and two hits.
Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) and
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) each scored two runs. In game two
Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded two hits and two RBIs, while
Mike Masino (Bayville, N.J.) added two hits and one runner batted in.
In game one, the Hawks began scoring in the bottom of the first. Falvey stole second base before advancing to third on a throwing error.
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) grounded out to the short stop, but Falvey was able to cross home, putting Roger Williams up 1-0 going into the next inning.
Western New England sprang into action in the top of the second, with K Shimada batting in two runners to bring the Golden Bears up 2-1.
It wasn't until the bottom of the third that Roger Williams scored again, with two Hawks on bases, Falvey bunted the ball, allowing for
Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) to score. A fly ball out to left field by Morin brought
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) in to score as well. The third inning ended with Roger Williams in the lead, 3-2.
The Golden Bears scored one run in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, with bases loaded, D. Massaro gained an RBI. Hibbard then had a hit that doubled out to right center, bringing in D. Massaro, Morin, and Falvey to solidify the Hawks lead.
The Golden Bears were the first to score in game two, earning a run on a fly ball out to right field in the top of the fourth.
The Hawks began scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) crossed home first. Hibbard was the next runner to score. Then, M. Massaro batted a single to right field, bringing in Falvey and
Justin Piskorski (Berlin, Conn.) to score. Roger Williams led the Golden Bears 4-1 going into the eighth.
Western New England scored one run in the top of the eighth.
Roger Williams (2-10, 1-0 CCC) will be on the road Tuesday at 3pm to take on Salve Regina. They will then face Babson on Thursday, March 30.
