BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University baseball team closed out their season on Friday defeating Western New England, 3-2, before falling to Salve Regina for their second loss in double-elimination play in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament.
The Hawks'
Dan Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) took the mound going 7.0 innings of four hit ball, allowing two earned runs with 10 strikeouts, and four walks in the game.
Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) went 2 for 4 in the game with one RBI and a run, while
Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) added a hit with a home run.
The Hawks started their opening game off on the right foot, with Morin reaching on a fielder's choice, the throw by the Golden Bears pitcher went wild on a throw to second with the intent to turn a double play, allowing
Matt Massaro to score on the errant throw.
After Western New England brought a run in in the top of the six, Morin responded for the Hawks with a solo shot to left field giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The Golden Bears hit a home run of their own in the top of the seventh, before
Matt Massaro hit a single to center in the bottom half of the inning, driving in the game winning run and eliminating Western New England.
With the quick turnaround to play the Seahawks,
Nick Gleason (Northboro, Mass.) picked up the start going 5.2 innings. Morin went 3 for 5 in the contest while
Aidan Hawley (Natick, Mass.) posted a 3 for 4 stat line with a walk.
Matt Massaro added two hits with an RBI, while
Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) also had an RBI.
The Hawks started the top of the first with a pair of runs when
Matt Massaro knocked a triple down the right field line and was followed by a ground out by
London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) brought in Massaro.
The Seahawks responded in the bottom half of the inning with a four-run bottom of the first, to take a 4-2 lead. It was scoreless from the second inning until the top of the first when Morin hit a double to left field cutting the Hawks deficit to one. Salve Regina then added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an 8-4 advantage.
Roger Williams tacked on a run in the top of the seventh, before Salve added four in the bottom of the seventh to take an 12-4 lead. The Hawks added a run in the eighth and ninth inning as they closed out their season.
Roger Williams (16-25, 9-7 CCC) were one game away from reaching the CCC Championship series after earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.
