Field Hockey: Hawks Score Twice in Each Half, Defeat Owls

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team downed Westfield State, 4-0, on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.
 
The Hawks out shot the Owls 21-5, putting 14 shots on cage to Westfield State's two. The Hawks also led with nine penalty corners in the matchup, with six coming in the opening 30 minutes.
 
The Hawks had four different goal scorers in the matchup, including Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) who led the way with four shots on goal and provided one of two assists for the Hawks. In net, Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.) stopped both of the Owls shots on net.
 
Roger Williams struck 5:29 into the first quarter when King passed the ball in for Kelly Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) who scored for the Hawks.  After a foul inside the scoring area just over four minutes later, the Hawks struck again, with Hunter Phillips (Schuylerville, N.Y.) converting on a penalty stroke, giving Roger Williams a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.
 
After a scoreless second frame, the Hawks struck 1:38 into the second half with the Hawks Abigail Stevens (Brewster, Mass.) firing a shot into the back of the cage with an assist being awarded to Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.). King added a goal of her own in the final frame to secure the Hawks victory.
 
Roger Williams (3-1, 0-0 CCC) will travel to Wesleyan for a Thursday, Sept. 14 matchup at 6:30 pm before hosting Manhattanville on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1:00 pm on Bayside Field. The Hawks will then play Salve Regina in non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 pm.
