PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team placed fifth at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Tournament hosted at Johnson & Wales University on Sunday.
The Hawks opened the day with a 26-15 victory over Rhode Island College. RIC opened with a technical fall win at 125 pounds, before Roger Williams earned wins at 133 and 141 pounds, with
Christopher Tringali and
Matt Castillo earning victories respectively. RIC retook the lead with a win at 149 pounds, taking a 9-8 lead.
Ben Bariso then sparked a four-match winning streak, pinning his opponent at 157 pounds.
In their second match of the day, Coast Guard completed a 51-0 victory, as the #13 team in the country controlled the match.
In the fifth place bracket, Roger Williams earned a 28-12 victory against Wesleyan, earning key victories at 141-pounds with Castillo earning a technical fall win along with
Hunter Rasmussen at 285 pounds.
Spencer Fetrow earned a win by pinfall at 197 pounds.
In the fifth place bout, the Hawks came out victorious, downing Western New England 34-12.
Ari Dinerman took a major decision victory to start the match at 125 pounds, before the Golden Bears answered with a pinfall win at 133 pounds. Castillo again took the win at 141 pounds, but WNE picked up another pin at 149 pounds. The Hawks then went on to sweep the remaining six matches.
Roger Williams (7-3) will host Western New England, Plymouth State, and Bridgewater State on Saturday, Jan. 27 for a quad meet in the Campus Rec Center.
