SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England Golden Bears were able to overcome the Roger Williams University men's basketball team on Tuesday evening, downing the Hawks, 79-57 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
The Hawks were led by
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) who tallied 20 points, shooting 9-14 from the floor, with a pair of threes.
John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) added 11 points, with five rebounds in the loss, with
Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) and
Devin Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipping in seven and six points coming off the bench respectively. Lopes and Annus had a pair of steals on the defensive end and
Sean Gogolin (Winchester, Mass.) had a pair of blocks on the day.
Western New England saw three players score in double figures, as Gavin Greene scored a game-high 20 points, with Cody Palazzesi and Jake Harrison having 15 and 13 points respectively. Harrison stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, to pair with his defensive effort of three blocks and a steal.
The Golden Bears opened up the day, striking first when Gavin Greene opened up with a layup, 1:23 into the first half. The Hawks opened their scoring with Annus knocking down a three shortly after. Western New England then scored eight straight points to take a 10-3 lead. The Hawks responded with another three this time coming from
Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) but the Golden Bears again went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 23-6 advantage with 11:48 remaining in the opening half.
The Hawks were able to cut in slowly, cutting the deficit down to 20 heading into in the second half.
In the second half Western New England maintained at least a 17-point lead. Holding off the Hawks preventing the season sweep.
Roger Williams (9-9, 7-3 CCC) will host Curry for their Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 27 in the Campus Rec Center ahead of their scheduled 3 pm contest. Roger Williams will then face Hartford on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 pm.
